World Suicide Prevention Day
Suicide is a major public health challenge, with more than 700,000 deaths each year globally. Each suicide has far-reaching social, emotional, and economic consequences, and deeply affects individuals and communities worldwide.
The triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for 2024-2026 is "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with the call to action "Start the Conversation". This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides.
The call to action encourages everyone to start the conversation on suicide and suicide prevention. Every conversation, no matter how small, contributes to a supportive and understanding society. By initiating these vital conversations, we can break down barriers, raise awareness, and create better cultures of support.
On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day on 10th September 2024, a meeting was organized at Nachuni Mahavidyalaya, Nachuni among the college students. The theme of the meeting was “stress management”. Prof Amrita Lenka, Director and Dr Dasarathi Das, Executive Director of SAIHP Bhubaneswar attended the meeting. About 400 students along with the faculties of the college attended the meeting. Prof Amrita Lenka asked the students about their issues which are causing stress among them. Some students replied that parents not supporting their extracurricular activities like sports and due to poverty, they are lagging behind. Prof Lenka narrated her own experience that she made her career in Delhi when she faced problems like language, distance from home and other issues. She made the students realize that without pain there is no gain. Hence, they should work hard and concentrate on their studies. Dr Das had a PowerPoint presentation on stress management. At the outset, he thanked the founders of the college who established the college long back in 1981. He described the situations which bring stress and also suggested ways for its management. He gave examples of Arunima Sinha and Sheetal Devi. Despite the disaster and becoming an amputee Ms Arunima Sinha conquered Mount Everest and all the mountains of the world. Ms Sheetal Devi born without hands is now an international figure by winning the archery Paralympics. Hence whatever situations come students should face them bravely and overcome them. The meeting ended with a vote of thanks from Mr Dillip Behera, HOD Chemistry of Nachuni College.
